Genesis 3:1 English Standard Version (ESV)
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
Matthew 4:3-4 English Standard Version (ESV)
3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
The sad stupid story of Satan.
The text for today from Genesis 3 1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. And from Matthew 4 . 3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But he answered, “It is written,“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
In the Name of +Jesus+ Amen.
There is a board game out and a TV game show called 25 words or less. The object of the game is to get your team members to say a certain word. Each team bids for the amount of words they think they will need. Lets try it. I have a word here. I believe you will guess it in 5 words or less.
Adversary, slanderer, tempter, liar, evil, = Satan
Correct. These are the tools the devil uses. Half truth. Gray area. Accusing Doubt. The Devils words have just enough truth in them to seem really plausible. He showed us that in the Garden with Adam and Eve. “Did God really say”? There is no lie there,…….. but there is an accusation that God is a liar.
Satan deflect His evil onto God so Eve and Adam believe the lie. And now after mankind’s fall into sin and death, it seams its even easier for Satan to deceive us. He simply tells us what our broken self centered, old Adam wants to hear.
You don’t have time for God your too busy with (fill in the blank with your false god of choice, work, kids, recreation apathy lazyness,). You know what it is. Satan knows as well.
Here is one that works well in our postmodern Millennium culture. “What is truth?”
How about this one. “No one is looking. No one will know. Your not hurting anyone.
Our fist mistake when dealing with the Satan is listening to him. If you like the pop singer Meghan Trainor, she has good practical advice about the deceiver. “I know you lie cuz your lips are moving, then you lie lie lie”. If you listen to the deceiver what do expect he will do?
Dear child of God, Stop! Stop listening the father of lies, the deceiver the tempter. Don’t listen to the evil one. That is what got Eve into trouble in the first place. She began listening to another voice that was disguised as truth.
Hear dear child of God! Listen, this is s truth. We are Baptized. We are Christs. He is our Head. We are His body. He gives the orders. We follow. He has already won the complete Victory over the evil one. We are forgiven, and free.
Jesus Words when He was tempted by the evil one himself, prove that to us. One of the battles for your Redemption and Salvation looked like this. Satan speaks to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
Do you see the deception and deflection? Just turn these stones into bread! That simple statement was meant to put Jesus on the defensive. “If I am”
Jesus did not listen. Jesus did not have to defend Himself, He did not have to prove anything to this created angel gone bad. Jesus is truth, salvation, and redemption for all mankind. No lie from Satan will change that. No deception can undo the promise God made to Eve and Adam and all their children. 15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” This promise took on flesh and blood and dwelt among us. This promise was tempted and did not respond. The promise restored us. Jesus forgave us.
Have you noticed how the deceiver’s deceptions continually temp us away from Christ and His Gifts,…… and deceive us into thinking we can fight evil on our own? Satan did this to Jesus as well. the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” You can hear the deception and lies. You don’t have to die Jesus, just worship me. Forget about that cross and death I will give you power and take away your suffering.
It’s the same lie whispered into your ear, just a different time and place. If you listen to him he will try and convince you what God gives to you in Jesus is not enough.
He will try and convince you God’s laws are too restrictive.
He will try and convince you just like He tried to convince Jesus that he can give you what ever you sinfull heart desires and take away all your suffering.
Remember Dear child of God . Satan is a liar a deceiver and damned to hell.
Keep this in mind. Satan is created. He is not equal to God in anything.
Satan is not all knowing or all powerful. Those qualities are reserved for God the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit only.
Satan is defeated by Jesus perfect obedience,…. perfect death as our sacrifice, …perfect fulfillment of all the law for us. No matter what Satan says to you it is to destroy you, and tear down God’s reign.
Lets try the 25 words game again. I have 5 words to describe One. Love, Mercy, Forgiveness, Salvation, Sacrifice. = Jesus.
Jesus is truth. His Words from the cross, It is finished, are forgiveness for you. His complete perfect obedience to the Father covers all the times we have listened to another voice. His blood shed on the cross for you is total payment for the debt you could never pay.
Jesus has won the war with Satan. His dying was death’s death. But Satan is too stupid to quit fighting.
For now the battles wage on. Satan whispers, temps and lies and we respond. Stop that. Stop listening to the liar.
Listen to Jesus, the Word, the Way, the truth and the Life. Let Jesus the valiant one fight for us. Do what He says, Repent. Live in the freedom from sin. Let Jesus protect you. Put on the armor of God for your protection and let Jesus lead. He has promised to protect you.
In the Name of +Jesus+ Amen.
