The Lord’s Prayer
As the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.
What does this mean?
This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen, means, “yes, yes, it shall be so.”
Vocabulary for this week. Please define these words.
When you are thankful for something what do you say?
King David was grateful to God. What did He provide as his son, Solomon built the Temple where God would reside?
At the end of this reading, David gives a doxology of sorts. He points us back to God and His gifts to us. In vs. 11 what 4 things did David give thanks for.
David recognizes that all things come from __________!
LSC Q 292 Why did the Early Church include this doxology at the end of the Lord’s Prayer?
LSC Q 291 What does Amen mean?
When we say Amen at the end of a prayer it says YES I BELIEVE GOD WILL HEAR AND ANSWER THIS PRAYER!!
Why can we be so confident when we pray?
The Large Catechism, the seventh and last petition.
It is, therefore, an evil deception on those who pray as though they could not dare from the heart to say “Yes!” and positively conclude that God hears them. Instead, they remain in doubt and say, “How can I be so bold as to boast that God hears my prayers? For I am but a poor sinner,” and other such things.
The reason for this is, they do not respect God’s promises, but they rely on their own work and worthiness, by which they despise God and accuse Him of lying. Therefore, they receive nothing. As St. James says, “But let him ask in faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord” 1:6-7 Behold, God attaches such importance to this fact that we can be sure we do not pray in vain, so that we do not despise our prayer in any way.
Faith given to us as a gift helps us to believe and ask things of God, knowing with all confidence that He hears and answers.
What does it say about our faith is we do not pray?
Does God keep all His promises to us?
Martin Luther said once, “a Christian who does not pray is like a body without a pulse”. What was he really saying?
When you are in need of something are you willing to ask for help?
Why or why not?
Love and trust in our parents, friends and especially God our loving Father allows us to ask for things from them knowing and believing they will give us what is best for us.
Do you believe God will keep His promises to you?
What has God already given you?
Depending on the version of the Bible you read Jesus might have said, Truly, or Amen.
The very words of Jesus when He talks with His disciples are often. Truly, truly I say to you, which is really Amen Amen I say to you. When we end the Lords Prayer with Amen it is a bold confession of our faith in Him.
Who do I know that needs God’s help right now?
Please pray for them.
Being in God’s Word, being in Worship, praying, all increase our faith and give us more confidence to say Amen.
How can we as a family do better in living in the confidence of the Amen?
